OK - The reason that I was trying to contact them was that I am simply trying to stay "legal" and I don't want a huge unexpected tax bill to suddenly arrive through the letter box
I wrote to my local tax office - I assume that they do communicate with HQ ?
I had assumed that HMRC would be in contact with DWP (benefits) and would tax me on my ESA (Which IS a taxable benefit when paid as a CONTRIBUTION BASED benefit).......
I will wait for them to contact me

The total ESA received in 09/10 will be taken into consideration when HMRC calculate the tax owed in that year. Again give them some more time to action your letter.

If you are still on ESA now then it won't be taxed at source as DWP don't have the facility for doing that. However when/if you are able to get another job this year (10/11) you will find that the total ESA received up to the date of commencement of that job will be taken into consideration when HMRC issue the tax code for your new employer. That's assuming either you or DWP send the P45 to HMRC.

Given the information you have provided on both your threads you do not fall within the criteria for SA and so do not need to register and get a UTR.
