hi there could anyone tell me if there is a time limit to the gov reclaiming overpayments, ive been told with other parties i.e banks, lenders, the time limit is 6 years and after this time they cannot persue the matter further.
i have been subject to an overpayment case for 6 years in august but have heard nothing for the last 12 months.
i have always contested their claims and hope to finally put this behind me.
any help is appreciated.
paul.

They can ask you to pay back at any time. They can also deduct off of future benefits you are entitled to if you still owe them an overpayment. Not sure on the time frame, and what type of overpayments do have a time frame on them - but that's just for enforcing payment - they can still always ask, and they can still always deduct off of future payments.0

For a debt to be statued barred [sp] the debt must be over 6 years old and you must not have had any contact or paid anything towards the debt in that timeframe. Statued barred means that they can't take you to court to pursue the debt but it does not mean that they can not deduct it out of your future benefits. You are best coming to some kind of payment plan.0
