filling in holes in grass the dog has dug

I posted on here a while ago about garden ideas but haven't managed to magic up £3K for astroturf or more than that for a garden landscaper so I am going to do some MSE diy in the garden.

The dog has dug lots of holes in the grass and it is getting a bit dangerous when the grass is long as you never know what pothole you will stumble in. I also worry about the dogs breaking a limb when they charge round the garden.

Can I just buy cheap compost and stamp it down into the holes and plant new grass on it? Is there a particular kind required or any random one will do?

That will pretty much work. Any cheapy compost, though you get a more even result with a nice fine one. Add a bit of slow release fertiliser as well, if you have any.
