DNS Error

Options
For the past few weeks I have had problems visiting the forums of a particular website, although the site itself works fine.

Each time I try I get the following error:

Oops! This link appears broken.

DNS error occurred. Server cannot be found.

I've tried ringing the broadband helpline but they say it has nothing to do with them as I am using a belkin router, and belkin haven't been much helo either/ :-(
All the other sites work fine apart from this one.Any help would be appreciaited as I was using the site forums several times a day until the problem started.

    Hello Sara2323,

Which operating system are you using? Windows XP, Vista, 7 or something else?

Talktalk's DNS servers are useless. Use either Google's or OpenDNS's.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

use the OpenDNS ones...they're as good as you can get. Log into your router, find the DNS setup, and de-select to obtain DNS automatically. Then enter the openDNS server details in the appropriate boxes.

    primary:- 208.67.222.22
    secondary:- 208.67.220.220

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Assuming the router lets you specify them. Failing that, specify them on your PC.

yeah, but most routers worth their salt will let you manually select (unless the stoopid ISP has provided you with a firmware-frigged version of a perfectly good router ;)..for example D-Link 2640R, fw-frigged version of the excellent 2640B)

Thanks, I've just put the details of both into the DNS, but still getting the error. Is there anything else I can do?

The connection type is PPPoE, does this make a difference?

If your connection is working apart from the odd site, don't change that.

Check the website you're trying to load here: http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

If it's up for other people, and dns isn't a problem, and you've got nothing that could be blocking the site (firewall etc) then it looks like talktalk's routing.

    Windows + R

    cmd

    tracert https://www.whateverwebsiteitis.com

    paste the output here.

  • Try flushing your DNS cache - open a command prompt and type, without the quotes, 'ipconfig /flushdns'

Then open your browser and try again.
