Council Tax and moving house

Hope this forum is the right place

I currently renting and will be moving from Lincolnshire to Nottinghamshire on 16th July.

I'll inform the C/Tax people and I know I'll either get a rebate or an adjust bill however my concern is when I move to Notts will have have to pay the full years C/tax in 8 months?

I phoned the C/Tax team for Notts and they said they allow a month for new people to settle in and then work out the bill which she said would be £1388.52 divided by 8 months until the next year?

Is this right? Surely I don't need to pay the full year when I've been living in Lincolnshire for some of it

If somebody could let me know I'd be very grateful

ay x

Are you sure that the Notts price is the annual cost, or just 2/3 of it (i.e. 8 months out of 12 months)?

Admittedly I moved within the same local authority but they apportioned the cost according to time at the different houses (different banding).

    The charge will be apportioned.

You'll be charged in Lincolnshire from 1 April 2010 to 15 July 2010 (your charge will be re-calculated on vacation and any credit refunded)

    You'll be charged in Nottinghamshire for 16July 2010 to 31 Match 2011.

£1388.52 is a full years Council Tax charge for a Band C property in Nottingham , for the period you are resident you will owe (£1388.52/365) * 259 days = £985.28.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Thank you. I must of misunderstood what she was telling me. I thought I had to pay the whole year in 8 months. Thanks

Allowing a months grace for the date of payment from when you move I think they are trying to tell you that they'll allow you to pay across 8 month e.g August to March rather than the statutory payments which would be August to January.

Our council now does 12 monthly instalments as standard rather than 10.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
