how about just using a spread sheet or if you want a proper accounts package try clearly book keeping available from barclays , it's very easy to use , but it will cost you a bit , unless you ask them as a charity

yup, just been directed towards sage by our bank as apparently there are some fairly nifty reports you can run to show ur current business status etc.
  • Also quickbooks. Cheaper than sage, easier to use as it does not assume any accounting knowledge. I paid £39. PM me for a discount code, I think I can find one somewhere.

I've found that a lot of people try Sage but either give it up because it is too "accountant speak" or foul it up to such an extent that the reports produced are worthless. You need either to properly read the Sage help/manual before you start, go on a Sage course at your local College or get your accountant to set it up with you.

To a lesser extent, the same applies for most other "off the shelf" packages as most are simply far too complex for what the average small business needs. Quickbooks software is more "user friendly" but again there is the potential for a major foul-up if the user hasn't learned the system properly.

If all you need is book-keeping, then stick with excel spreadsheets simply showing the ins and outs - i.e. date, to/from whom, amount, and different columns for each income/expenses heading. Make sure it mirrors your bank statements exactly - don't forget to include the dds and sos etc.
  • does anyone have a sample spreadsheet I could use?
