I have two bottles of the 5 pints from Tesco in my cupboard,,purchased when we had all that snow.

It says on the side "Produced in Ireland for Tesco stores Ltd. Cheshunt EN8 95L.UK - no name of a manufacturer.

I am not happy to hear about this as I like to keep this to hand and it comes in useful on many occasions.

It is very strange that you cannot buy any alternatives in the major stores! So much for choice eh?

I've been checking online and still the only milk powder available is Marvel or basic/value stuff. I got in touch with Sainsburys as I noticed that the Nido did go back up on their web page after it appeared to have been taken down. So I asked if this was available, they said yes and I tried to order it online. For some reason it wouldn't let me order so I rang again and had to do the order over the phone. Now there were problems with their website and Nido has been taken off again, lol! I was told they were going to sort it out.

I now have Nido (hurrah!) but....it's not on Sainsbury's website, well, not for the time being. As for Five Pints I decided to get back in touch with Tesco again (I know I'm obsessed!!) and this time the customer services (after a lot of messing about) said Five Pints has been discontinued. I wanted to know about Tesco light choices milk powder and she said it was out of stock. Apparently, if you shop instore you can go to Customer Services desk and ask for them to put through an order of a product that is out of stock. (Of course 5 Pints has been discontinued, but I'd love to know if anyone else gets an answer about this.)

I did say to Tesco CS that I only shop online as my Tesco is too far, so I can't check the local store or go to their CS desk. She didn't understand why the light choices has been taken off (I think she assumed it is out of stock) as she looked online and couldn't see it. I had checked my previous orders and it was showing up as 5 Pints and light choices as not being available. I'm pretty sure light choices is a relatively new line to Tesco (that's why I was surprised it was unavailable) and she said she hadn't heard of it!

I just checked Ocado and they have taken the Plus Pints completely off their site! The saga continues....

ETA: On doing a google search I am so surprised that nobody else has said they've had problems with getting their usual milk powder i.e. Plus Pints, 5 pints and Tesco light choices. As I don't venture to Tesco can anyone tell me what milk powder is stocked at their store? (I know Marvel and Value stuff is still selling online.)

Ballandchain I was just about to log off when I suddenly remembered that I bought a version of the 5 pints type product from Morrisons some time back.

Maybe someone on here who shops at Morrisons can have a look for us.
I don't go there that often myself.

I believe it was St Ivel.

Used to be a drinking game at Uni - St Ivel was when you achieved the drinking of 5 pints....
Can anyone remember the name of the manufacturer of the original 5 pints?
With all this blog how can Tesco deny that there is no demand for this product when we have all taken the trouble to register this. How many others are there out there who just couldn't be bothered or even thought that you could do such a thing!
This is the only dried milk I know of that has added vegetable fat. Delicious for making the hot chocolate or Horlicks.

Yes I have some! Never tried it before but it's quite nice. The only thing is I didn't want to rely on just Sainsburys as I had a lot of messing about just to order it.

Five Pints was definitely St.Ivel - I still have a 5 Pints bottle used since it has 5 useful lines marked on it to measure out the pints.

Kerrygold made Pluspints in Ireland - a product that changed very little in 30 years, retaining the same packaging - the top is identical to that used on Five Pints so I suspect it was originally brought out as a mimic of Five Pints. Recently it changed from hydrogenated vegetable oils. I found that it dissolved much better than pure dried skimmed milk in hot drinks. However, it was clearly a product that had not had much development/promotion and the packaging/printing was poor quality/worn out. I think Kerrygold have taken it off the market along with own brand versions they also made in Ireland, eg the larger Sainsbury nine pints version?

Skimmed dried milk such as the Aldi own brand (repackaged St.Ivel?) do not contain added vegetable fat. Unusually, most dried skimmed milk is made in the UK while much evaporated/condensed milk comes from Germany.

Part of the problem might be the decline in dairy farming/ higher value demand for milk for liquid and cheese purposes.
  • Hi all, I read all your comments with interest as we have been using this dried milk with veg fat for years and love it. I have searched Tesco, Sainsburys, asda etc etc - no joy. I emailed tesco and they said it had been discontinued, but that they would lodge a 'complaint' for me and it would be considered. I asked how many requests it would take to reinstate a product and they said it would only take one but i think more would be needed, so come on all you out there who are missing this great product, go on the Tesco website, click on 'contact us' and lend your support to getting this back on the shelves. There obviously are lots of us who use it and miss it.
  • It was indeed St.Ivel who made FivePints, I have two tea towels!

As jofam8 said, the only way to get this back in stores is to file a complaint (or just ask them nicely!)

I have done just that and I'm sure if everyone who has read this thread does the same, Tesco will at least consider restocking it.

Just go here: tescohelp.com/tesco/forms/cs_form.html and fill in the form.

'Please Mr. Tesco, can we have our beloved milk powder back?'
