Transferring a Debit

Hi

If I have a debit on a gas/electric account can I transfer that as when I switch to a new provider or do I need to settle first?

Any ideas guys?

The above reply is correct. You will have to settle debt with the old company, as it's your debt with them, and another supplier will only deal with your electricity responsibilities from transfer date on.

And the above reply is correct, your current supplier is likely to object if you try to move and you do have a debt.

However if you are on a payment arrangement to pay with your current supplier, you could try to leave anyway, your current supplier may let it go through either because they might not be on the ball with checking, or because you have an arrangement to pay so they'd figure you'll continue to pay up what you owe.

You don't lose anything by trying to leave anyway. My advice would just be to be careful you can afford to pay back both, as your new supplier will want payment in full for bills as they come (or setting up a monthly payment plan) so you just need to be able to juggle old and new. The old one will get nasty if you don't pay up once you've left.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Some campanys will accept a transfer of debt on a prepayment meter.
