Hi Kev. I went last year and we climbed to the top of the Minster. It's not free but it takes a little while and you can spend some time up there looking at the great Vista (if it is a clear day!). It wasn't horrendously expensive either from memory. If it had of been I am sure I wouldn't have done it! lol
We also went to the fort place (near museum - which ISN'T free and is quite expensive if I remember correctly!) which was also giving nice views and was only a few quid.
Generally strolling around the place was quite pleasant too.
Hope you have a lovely day.Bank Balance: In the black for the moment.

hello there
As a bonifide yorkie may i suggest going to the national railway museum (not as boring as it sounds-honest) which is free also the art gallery again gratis
most of the other museums are free to york residents with a york card (dont know if you are visiting people who might have one) & minster is free with a minster card. Again just walking round the walls is good, and having a picnic in the museum gardens is nice. Errm trying to think of other free things is hard as drinking is really the main social activity in york (or is that just me?)
have a lovely time0 -
Ummm....
Clifffords Tower (the fort thingy near the museum) is English Heritage - I'm sure I've seen something about reduced entry for them somewhere...
Castle museum is allegedly free (not sure on this - haven't been for a while).
The National Railway Museum is also free - and packed with v. interesting exhibits - ever wondered how a steam engine really works?
Beware the Yorkshire wheel (like the london eye) - it's lower than the minster, and more expensive for much less time at the top!
Circumnavigation of the walls is also free - and worth it, even if only 'cos it saves a couple in the pub
But start at Walmgate or Peasholme green - the bit along Foss Islands Road is not worth it (mainly because it doesn't exist!) FWLBM - 1st Sept 06 - Debts: around £80k (not entirely sure...:o )0 -
There is a very interesting booklet you can buy in most bookshops in York called The Snickleways of York (or something like that) that takes you on a guided tour around York's streets giving the history of each place visited. It's only a couple of quid to buy the book and the route passes plenty of pubs to keep your mates happy too.0

Former York resident here...
I agree with MsArcher, the Railway Museum is very very cool and totally free, but give the wheel a miss - the best view of York is definitely from the Minster Tower. It's now a fiver  to get into the Minster, but it's an awesome building. You have to pay extra to go up to the top of the tower, but you get get the most amazing view.
The City Art Gallery is free too.
Definitely walk the walls - the best bit is from Bootham Bar, past Dean's Park (a good picnic spot) to Monkbar, where the Royal Oak does an excellent pint and a good value pub lunch.
If beer does have to be on the agenda, it's £4.50 for a tour of the York Brewery which includes "generous beer sampling" http://www.yorkbrew.demon.co.uk/visit.htm
Have fun! :beer:0 -
Walking along the river is nice, you could take a picnic to save money. There is a really nice park with ruins in near the registry office, (marygate I think) others can correct me if I'm wrong.
There is usually all sorts of street entertainment for free in York around the Shambles and main shopping area.
Near the Jorvik Viking centre there was a lady doing free viking activities for children on Wednesday, not sure if that'll still be on.
Some fascinating buildings to look around the outside. There is a free guide and map that you can pick up at Tourist Info (google to find location) and the park and ride is really reasonable for less/free parking charges. They also have the free map thing.
Have fun. Hope the sun shines.DFW Nerd 267. DEBT FREE 11.06.08
