Sea Fishing?

Possibly silly questions... so please bear with me :o We're going to Cornwall (as we do each year) for the summer. My OH and kids (14,16) really want to try and catch some fish whislt we're down there but we don't know where to start. Googling is a minefield of detailed information so we wonder if anyone could point us in the right direction regarding basics?

Is sea fishing allowed/licensed? any good areas in north cornwall? I don't mean from a boat but from the shoreline......
What equipment would be needed? (Aldi have some rods in at the moment with reels for £20 but don't know if these are suitable)

As you can tell we're completely cluesless but eager and willing :D any advice is greatly appreciated.

TIA :)

Don't make it more complicated than it needs to be. Fishing from the rocks in Cornwall can be cheap, and pleasurable- and there's no need to drown in info! Our DD bought a £1 telescopic rod and a £1 reel from poundland before her hiking trip in Ireland last year- she pulled up fish aplenty, and the same rod was used last week to catch a substantial carp (with a lump of sweetcorn!) in a lake in Brittany.

As it's your first time, spend very little. Find a tackle shop near where you're going, and ask what bait to use- they're the guys with the local knowledge. If you're float fishing on the rocks, chances are you'll be using ragworm.

    Have fun :)

    Hi

Any sea rods will be suitable, the ones at ald/lidl are cheap and chearful but will do the job. Fishing in the sea with rod and line is not licenced and can be done at anytime of the year. If you are fishing from the beach in the summer months your best bet is feathering for mackeril. You can fish anywhere, best bet would be to speak to local tackle shops/bait supplier and ask what is about and where its being caught. You will no doubt see plenty of people fishing.

    Hope this is usefull

Thanks so much . This is just what we needed some no nonsense moneysaving advice! It turns out that my brother has a couple of old rods so we've borrowed those. I'll check poundland out too, who'd have thought you could get fishing gear in poundland! so we're more or less set up now just need to find a tackle shop when we get there. I'm so excited at the thought of catching fresh mackerel! I wonder if we can forage for mussels too......;)

    Thanks again
  • Hi

The outer harbour wall at Mevagissey is good for fishing. They also have a fishing shop on the harbour if you need anything. Make sure the tide's in though or you won't be able to fish!
  • I would echo other peoples advice to ask the locals. Most are only to happy to help fishing novices. Make sure they are safe where they fish as the tides can change very quickly. I always take my rod when I go to Cornwall; never catch much but I still enjoy it.

Thanks hazel, Mevagissey is a bit far from where w are staying as we are in Bude, but thanks anyway. If anyone knows any hotspots in North Cornwall that would be great. Thanks for the advice about the tide, didn't know this either!
    :D

I think there is a sort of harbour type thingy in Bude that you can fish from. Most of the beaches around there are very much surfing beaches and surfers and fishermen don't really mix, so you have to go a little bit out of the way. HTH
