Trust a Trader WebSite

Options
Hi

I would like to know peoples opinions/experiences from using tradesmen on the Trust A Trader Website.

I am looking to have a large extension built on my home and have obtained 3 quotes from builders from this site.

One of the builders has come in £20,000 cheaper, but he has excellent client references on Trust A Trader and upon meeting him, I got the general feeling that he was competent.

This weekend I am going to see a couple of his jobs, followed by him coming to see me a second time to discuss the job in more detail.

I am nervous about possibly taking on a builder whose quote is that much cheaper, but am trusting this Website .... Do you think I should?? Also, how could I find out if those client references on the site, or the jobs I will be viewing are genuine.
Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.

Tyoe the chaps name in to google.

Type his informal name (Billy for William for example), also use his phone number and post code to search

£20,000 is a lot of difference- this alone should set alarm bells ringing- is he charging VAT for example.

    try www.canyoutrustthem.com

I have seen some builders who have a less than flavoursome reputation and they have good reviews on these sites; I know of a less than fantastic electrical firm who get rave reviews on 2 of these sites as they aren't registered throw in cheap tat that looks nice, don't care about doing the job right

Also look up companies house or similar sites to check if he has been in business under a different name
    baldly going on...

How big (in square metres) is the planned extension and is it single or two storey? Rule of thumb is iro £ 1k per square metre for single storey and £ 1.2 - 1.5 k for two storeys.

See how your rough calc approximates to the quotes you have received. Whats the percentage variation between this guy and the more expensive ones?

Oh and BTW these wretched sites exist for one reason and one reason only - to make money for themselves. Nothing to do with helping the customer or the trader. Waste of space, time and money.

    Cheers
