Options
does anyone know of any furniture village or similar where there are lots of quality furniture shops? Or a designer furniture outlet?

Who does good quality wood furniture?

none of the major nationals for a start. its nearly all imported stuff.
there are few uk quality furniture makers left now, making with real solid wood. true quality furniture is very expensive.
better to go to auctions and buy old furniture.
    Get some gorm.

We recently went to furniture village and was told the modular unit we liked was made in UK. Not sure if they are trying to pull a fast one though!

Why not try British Heart Foundation furtniture stores. Once you get past the cheap 70's laminate furniture, you can get beautiful furniture. I found two wardrobes for 25.00 each, oak, with really old style drawers.

    If you are in the london area this place is very good;

    http://www.londonwarehouse.co.uk/index.htm

I bought a 6' solid oak dining table with 6 leather chairs for around £350, and a solid oak hall table which was about £80 i think. Both very good quality imho.
They have lots of ranges from high street and department stores, cancelled orders/end of lines etc.

thanks - im in the london area

someone suggested goodge st, with the lombak, heals, conran etc, but i think thats all designer furniture rather than quality furniture

i would shop online but want to look at the stuff before I buy

will go trawling the high st (john lewis, house of fraser etc) and see what I think

something like ercol is what im looking for but handmade quality stuff is hard to find it seems!

    Hi

We live in Hertford and down the road in Ware there is a company called Old Charm, they manufacture beautiful peices of furniture at I think reasonable prices. Don't be put off by the name as they also have more contemporary ranges as well.

    https://www.oldcharm.co.uk

    Good luck.

I'll echo the point Ormus made about buying at auction - it's not all 'Granny' stuff and you can get some wonderful quality furniture both antique and modern.
I paid £10 for a solid yew wood dining table a couple of years ago.

I wouldn't touch new furniture with a bargepole.
