Advice on changing supplier

I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, but we moved into our first house nearly four months ago and are with Powergen for gas and electricity. We pay £40 per month direct debit and, so far, after our first bill we were in credit by £46.

I know Powergen are upping their prices (they have written to us to advertise their capped rates should we wish to take these up), and that now is the time to shop around for better deals, but do you think it is worth sticking with Powergen for a year so we can see what our usage etc. is over the winter? Would this have any benefits or should we just look at our current usage for the past four months and compare to other suppliers?

Any advice greatly appreciated - the whole supplier thing thing is a bit daunting and we don't want to lose out by making a decision too quickly that will cost us more money.

Thanks,
