    Hi there,
Completely new to this idea of reclaiming (stolen?) cash (got a few banks + a very irritating CC to try and reclaim some stuff from) but in this case it's Nationwide's ridiculous fee.
On the 1st of June a £35 payment went out that took my account over by £3.40 The same day a transfer for £400 came in from Barclay's keeping the account in check.
Nationwide charged me £30 for the privilege of refusing to pay the direct debit meaning I had to go into the place and pay it in person the next day.

Is there any way of getting this back? I'm fully committed to leaving their sorry selves if they don't, hoping that will be force enough :-)

I doubt threatening to leave them will make a difference. Banks are not refunding charges at the moment in general. If it is your first offence, you may want to call them and ask them, but you may want to be apologetic about what has happened. If you word it as above, they are very unlikely to remove the charge.
    Best Regards

  • to be fair to NW, I just had the same thing happen. I stupidly didn't transfer enough cash to cover a DD and got a £15 charge for it. I called and as it's my first time, they wiped the fee.

    Fantastic service from NW!

  • I think you'll also find that unpaid DD charges are summarised in every financial institutions charges brochure, and it will say along the lines of if items are returned, a fee of £xx will be made. That is effectively notifying you in advance, so they could take the fee immediately, which is what the bank I work for does.

At the end of the day, it is the account holder's responsibility to have sufficient funds in the account prior to the payment being presented, in order for items to be paid.

If a DD is presented early, or for the wrong amount, it is the DD beneficiary's fault, not the bank, so in such a case the beneficiary/DD claimant should refund your charge.
Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!
  • nationwide sent out some leaflets about this transaction fee.it sometimes occurs when they have taken your overdraft facility away, because you dont go overdrawn enough.then if a go into it, even for a few days, they will charge you the fee.
i phoned them and they will then waiver the fee.
