recommend a good estate?

Options
Hi all

First time posting in this section...so please be gentle!

Oh and I are looking to replace our 406 saloon (despite costing £900 nearly 3 years ago, has not broken down once, nor needed anything other than tyres and sparks) OH very much likes this car, but needs must

We are expecting our first baby in October, but also have three dogs, so an estate is what we need now. Would like diesel (oh drives 30miles to work everyday)

We dont have a huge budget (£1250 ish) but whatever we buy we would like to keep for a wee while.

Can anyone suggest anything that might be worth looking at or to deffo avoid?

Many thanks

I had a 405 estate for years and it was great.

If you are happy with the 406 you should be able to get a decent estate for your budget.

You might get one like this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201023360900692/sort/priceasc/usedcars/fuel-type/diesel/body-type/estate/price-to/2000/model/406/make/peugeot/page/3/postcode/sp61ej/radius/1501?logcode=p

    with a bit of haggling.

IMHO, avoid French and Italian, but VFM and quality comes with Jap and German.

    Skoda?

Early Mk3 Mondeo's are pretty robust things.

Older Passats are also worth looking at.

we were told that...but the 406 we have has been rock solid, my old man also had one (his was diesel) that did 250k before it went to the big garage in the sky

The 1.9TD 406 diesel was powered by the XUD class engine, which is one of the most reliable and well used diesel engines in the world. 250k plus is not unheard of. If you get another 406 with that engine it will also run on vegetable oil.

Only problem is that particular engine was replaced by the new 2.0 HDi in about 2000 so if you get one with the 1.9 it will be over ten years old.

Would cost you less than £1000 though and would still probably be good for many more years.

The Citreon Xantia estate before 2000 also had the same reliable XUD engine.

What year would you say the last of the bomb proof ones were made?

Edit I would also add a W124 Mercedes to the list too (but you might consider them a bit long in the tooth now) there are some still immaculate ones out there.

At that price i would avoid the MK3 mondeo and go for the MK2 estate 1.8 diesel, Not the most powerful
engine but reliable plodder. Make sure the cambelt & pulleys have been done.

Lot cheaper to fix than a MK3 especially the common rail £1000 bill for injectors.
And £1000 for the clutch and DMF flywheel.

Makes me wonder why did i buy one lol.
