Hi

In my Basic FREE Halifax Current Account my Balance says £64.65, yet my available balance says £62.65.

Why is this.

It has happened a couple of times now and it goes back to normal at some point. Just don't know why it happens.

I am NOT emailing them or calling them.

Regards

Karl

I have no idea why this happens, but I have noticed this happening on my Alliance & Leicester current account. It might be something to do with their computer systems?
  • Maybe I should contact them.

Just luck you get someone that knows what they are talking about, that does not happen very often. Not just Banks either.

    Thanks for reply.

Happens on my Lloyds account as well, mainly when I shop in Tesco strangely enough!

Some shops (usually online retailers I think) take a small amount (usually only £1 or £2) just to confirm that the account exists before billing for the whole amount/providing the product. This gets credited back to the account within a few days.

I phoned Halifax last month because I had £8 I couldn't account for and that was the answer - I'd been buying birthday presents online from a few places. It was credited back within the week.

I wonder if someone has reserved £2 off your account possibly to check it, before payment?

Play.com (I think) amongst others did this to me on a CC and I could see it was a pending payment that just dropped off after time.

Really you are best call them- they can give you the answer!
  • I have had a Paypal go through in last 3 weeks and just had a money transfer from Bank of England for some old banknotes I had.
    So might be that.

Well my question answered so many thanks for that.

Anyway, least know what it is now.

So what happens if you need all the money in your account?

    Regards

Do you online shop at Asda / use unmanned petrol pumps ........ as they seem to be the main source of £1 per time temporary deductions from 'available'.

If you sign up your Debit Card to Halifax Secure (their version of Verify by Visa) ..... strangely, as it's allegedly in-house, that will also temporarily remove money from 'available'. But that tends to be £2.50.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Paypal will reserve £1 when you initially add a credit card to your account, but shouldn't do after that.

Unfortunately Paypal tends to reserve £1 without warning every time you use your card. One of the banks (Lloyds TSB, I think) puts a £3 reservation when you register for verified by visa. Again this is without warning and their call centre will deny any knowledge when you query it.
