Painting external metal railings

I'm going to be painting external metal railings soon.
Can you please advise me on the best paint to use, I'm going to use black for the main body and silver for the decorative parts. Will the paint be gloss or satin type finish, is there a choice of finishes?
Thanks

Id go for hammerite, its basically paint thats made for metal.0

If you want to stop them rusting, an undercoat of galvafroid is the only way to go. Expensive, but well worth it. Paint hammerite over that.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

I'd go with Hammerite as well. Use cellulose thinners to clean the brushes.0

hamerite paint everytime. i dont use anything else.
the last metal fence i did, i used the aerosol spray! expensive but very very quick!
ps
put cardboard behind the fence.Get some gorm.0 -
I wanted to paint the railings black and silver. B&Q did not have any black Hammerite paint so I got their own brand. I painted the railings on Friday evening and its rubbish, it doesn't seem to want to dry and remains sticky. The silver Hammerite paint is perfect.
Can I return it to B&Q for a refund/exchange (I'll go to a B&Q superstore) as its not fit for purpose?
Thanks for all the replies:)0 -

I may be wrong but I don't think you can use Hammerite straight over Galvafroid.
If the railings are galvanised under the existing paint Hammerite recommend using "special metals primer".
I agree that Galvafroid is excellant stuff though.:D
Halfords do Hammerite in various colours and the SM primer too0 -

Specifically which paint is it? What does it say on the tin?
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:You ARE kidding of course.
Cheers
B&Q Exterior Gloss One Coat.
Long lasting exterior protection.
Self undercoating
Easy to apply
Resists drips and runs
For exterior wood and metal.
Allow 16 hours between coats.
I went to my dad's to watch the footy game. I was talking to him about the paint and he said he bought the same from the local B&Q. Even though he painted his railings several weeks ago, in places where he had put too much paint on and its ran, the paint moves when you press it. Is it just because the weather is hot, shouldn't the paint dry hard even if it has ran?
Pity I didn't see his railings/paint first before buying B&Q own brand:(
Why can't I take the paint back? Its crap quality for £22. I'll phone them tomorrow and ask for an exchange. Nothing ventured, nothing gained...0 -
You've put it on much too thick. Thats why its not drying. Always better two thin coats than one thick one.
Why can't you take it back? Let me see now. Oh yes that would prolly be because it sounds as though you've not used it properly.
