Woodchip advice - can't live with it, can't take it off!

We have old woodchip in two of our bedrooms, on all the walls and on the ceilings!!!

It is horrible looking and not in the best condition, BUT it is holding the plaster on - there is no way we can remove it without having to re-plaster both rooms - something we cannot afford to do ATM.

Does anyone have any advice on what we can do to make it look better without removing it? Is there anything we can put on top of it, like really thick lining paper or something?

Many thanks for any advice!

There was a thread a few days ago about this, if I was a bit more clever at links I would tell you where it was. :o Do a search and you could probably find it. ;)
  • Yes there is something you can get which you put on over the woodchip - a bit like DIY plastering. I saw it in a Homestyle type magazine but can't find it. If you go to B & Q they might have it, otherwise a specialist paint shop.
There are three ways to get something done; do it yourself, hire someone or forbid your kids to do it.

yes there is something that'll go over it,

It's a paper called Wall Doctor bascically for poor walls and the beloved woodchip, it comes in a couple of patterns and can be painted over.

You local Dulux Decorating Centre will have as thats where i seen it, i imagine b&q and homebase will prob have it too.

I would imagine John is talking about an anaglypta type paper, thats the only thick embossed type of paper I can think off that would cover 'woodchip'

You can get heavy duty Lining paper 1400 grade from decorators shops, I have heard that there is a 1700 out now, which is a lot heavier and thicker, but I have never used it, I have used the 1400, and its very good, but still dont think it will hide the bobbly bits from the wood chip.

also I would say that you have to use a heavy duty paste also to stick on top of the woodchip.

Couldnt you try and strip one room?, if you strip by hand and not use a steamer/stripper, then there will be less chance of you blowing the plaster underneath.
Woodchip is not that bad to strip once you get going.:)
