I had no idea people picked their own readings.

I would HATE someone reading something I hadn't "ok'd" at our ceremony :o

My son is doing a reading and I'll pick that...expecting a teenage lad to read is one thing, expecting him to actually take the time to find something suitable??? well we know THAT won't happen :rotfl:
But I'm having a friend of ours do another and I have asked them (he'll read but she'll have a hand in the choice!) to choose one and I don't want to know what it is...I trust them completely, they are an older couple, both very well read and will find something I've probably got no hope of finding so I'm really looking forward to what they come up with. And he has a lovely Scottish accent to so I can't wait :)
• Yes I'll marry you, my dear,
You may not apprehend it,
But when the tumble-drier goes
It's you that has to mend it,
You have to face the neighbour
Should our labrador attack him,
And if a drunkard fondles me
It's you that has to whack him.

Yes, I'll marry you,
You're virile and you're lean,
My house is like a pigsty
You can help to keep it clean.
That sexy little dinner
Which you served by candlelight,
As I do chipolatas,
You can cook it every night!

It's you who has to work the drill
and put up curtain track,
And when I've got PMT it's you who gets the flak,
I do see great advantages,
But none of them for you,
And so before you see the light,
I do, I do, I do!

Today is a day you will always remember
The greatest in anyone's life
You'll start off the day just two people in love
And end it as Husband and Wife
It's a brand new beginning the start of a journey
With moments to cherish and treasure
And although there'll be times when you both disagree
These will surely be outweighed by pleasure
You'll have heard many words of advice in the past
When the secrets of marriage were spoken
But you know that the answers lie hidden inside
Where the bond of true love lies unbroken
So live happy forever as lovers and friends
It's the dawn of a new life for you
As you stand there together with love in your eyes
From the moment you whisper 'I do'
And with luck, all your hopes, and your dreams can be real
May success find it's way to your hearts
Tomorrow can bring you the greatest of joys
But today is the day it all starts

We are thinking of getting my nan to do one and getting OH's neice to do the other - she is 8, is this too young? (she goes to stage school and does panto so dont think she will get stage fright).

• I do love this thread and have duly stolen a couple of the readings as I was completely stumped.
A friend had mentioned the velveteen rabbit or winnie the pooh fo readings but wasnt too sure as it will be mainly slightly older individuals who are doing our readings.

I think it's a lovely idea to get her to read. I think it's lovely to give children something to do other than bridesmaid/flower girl/pageboy. My friend had her 10yr old half brother play his clarinet at her wedding...you have never seen such a theatrical bow afterwards and it was a lovely touch :)

I think that it is very much up to each couple to decide on how the readings are picked.

I've read at quite a few weddings - both family and friends - and it has always been the couple who chose the readings. And why not? It's a way for them to express how they see their union.

That said, if people know friends/family could come up with something perfect and personal - and the friends/family are happy to do that - then go for it! It sounds lovely.

And, I have to say that, when the moment comes, even the unlikeliest readings seem to work. There have been a couple of occasions when I have been asked to read the Song of Solomon verse about "My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag", and have looked at the stereotypically taciturn, stolid and solid Scottish groom and wondered how I'd get through the reading without giggling!

Yet, on the day, watching bride and groom look at each other, it has seemed absolutely perfect for the two of them! :kisses3:

I would have loved to have had a child do a reading - it would be amazing but we have a 4 and 2yr old and a 10 month old - we do have a 14yr old but he just wouldn't do it! It has taken him 6 years to talk to me! He is really shy and quiet. There are some lovely ones that are not too long! Will go and have a look and see if I can find the one I was thinking of! x
• There is this one
Us Two from Now We Are Six
A.A. Milne (1882-1956)

Wherever I am, there's always Pooh,
There's always Pooh and Me.
Whatever I do, he wants to do,
"Where are you going today?" says Pooh...
"Well, that's very odd 'cos I was too.
"Let's go together," says Pooh, says he.
"Let's go together," says Pooh.
"What's twice eleven?" I said to Pooh,
"Twice what?" said Pooh to Me.
"I think it ought to be twenty two."
"Just what I think myself," said Pooh.
"It wasn't an easy sum to do,
But that's what it is," said Pooh, said he.
"That's what it is," said Pooh.
"Let's look for dragons," I said to Pooh.
"Yes, let's," said Pooh to Me.
We crossed the river and found a few...
"Yes, those are dragons all right," said Pooh.
"As soon as I saw their beaks I knew.
That's what they are," said Pooh, said he.
"That's what they are," said Pooh.
"Let's frighten the dragons," I said to Pooh.
"That's right," said Pooh to Me.
"I'm not afraid," I said to Pooh,
And I held his paw and I shouted "Shoo!
Silly old dragons!"... and off they flew.
"I wasn't afraid," said Pooh, said he,
"I'm never afraid with you."
So wherever I am, there's always Pooh,
There's always Pooh and Me.
"What would I do?" I said to Pooh,
"If it wasn't for you," and Pooh said... "True,
It isn't much fun for One, but Two
Can stick together," says Pooh, says he.
"That's how it is," says Pooh.

Our family is a circle of love and strength.
With every birth and every union, the circle grows.
Every joy shared odds more love.
Every obstacle faced together makes the circle stronger.

that's lovely, MissNixon! I would love that, but I just know the future husband would be sniggering like a school boy every time whoever was reading it said "Pooh" if we had it at our wedding! :o
