Readings for wedding

Options
Hi All,

Can you help me?

The readings in a church wedding, religious/non religious... whats the etiquette on those?

I.E do I choose them and then ask the selected person to read out? Or do you leave it up to the person you have asked to choose?

I have found some nice ones but dont want to be 'Bridezilla-ish' and enforce my choices!! :rotfl:

TIA

I'm having a civil ceremony and thinking of asking my youngest son to do it. His elder brother will be giving me away, my stepson-to-be is best man, my stepdaughter-to-be is my bridesmaid so I want to give my youngest a 'job' too. But if you think I'd leave it to a 17yr old lad to choose....noooooo way, he'll read what I tell him to :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I asked my nan a while ago, and she asked the other day if I'd found anything. I was assuming she might look for something, but then I realised where would she look really!

Just ask the people you want to do a reading if they would like to find something themselves, or if they'd like some ideas you've found some nice things. Some people might relish the idea of finding/writing something perfect for you, whilst others might be at a total loss and grateful for you to give them something!

Can I be nosy and ask what you're having?!

  • Hi Angela,

I like 2 one is from Sex and the City and the other I found online. Here they are:

His hello was the end of her endings
Her laugh was their first step down the aisle
His hand would be hers to hold forever
His forever was as simple as her smile
He said she was what was missing
    She said instantly she knew
She was a question to be answered
And his answer was "I do"

    and the other:

Marriage is about giving and taking
    And forging and forsaking
Kissing and loving and pushing and shoving

Caring and Sharing and screaming and swearing
About being together whatever the weather

About being driven to the end of your tether
    About Sweetness and kindness
    And wisdom and blindness

It's about being strong when you're feeling quite weak
It's about saying nothing when you're dying to speak
It's about being wrong when you know you are right
It's about giving in, before there's a fight
It's about you two living as cheaply as one(you can give us a call if you know how that's done!)

Never heeding advice that was always well meant
Never counting the cost until it's all spent
And for you two today it's about to begin
And for all that the two of you had to put in
Some days filled with joy, and some days with sadness
Too late you'll discover that marriage is madness.

I'm having one religious and one non-religious reading

This is the religious one my friend has chosen to read:

    I Corinthians 13:1-13

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

i'm having a religious wedding so i'm picking the readings and prayers of the faithful and will ask the priest to check over them before the wedding so everything is okay.

but all in all i think you choose the readings etc for your wedding and then assign them to people.

that's the way i'd be doing it even if i was having a civil ceremony.

The sex in the city one is lovely. Remember it from the programme but not heard of it as a reading, nice! I like the humour in the next one.

I like the 'Lonely Dinosaur' reading if you've seen it. Would love a child to do it, but dont really have the right age.

Hi, this is my first post but my husband is a minister so I know a reasonable amount about church weddings. :) I think it would be usual for you (and bridegroom?) to choose them; that doesn't seem Bridezilla-ish at all! But for a church wedding you must run them, and the whole order of service, by the vicar/minister/pastor/priest/whatever as even though it's your wedding it's his/her responsibility. Plus especially if it's a summer Saturday he/she may have other weddings so will need to make sure yours doesn't overrun! Good luck and I hope you have a wonderful wedding and marriage.

    Thanks aliphil :-)
Yes it would be me and OH to choose ;-)
I had already spoken to the preist and he had mentioned about running past him first so no worries there xx
