An easier option (thanks again to Nir):

Thanks I tried this but it did not reveal anything but thanks for the advice anyway
I hope you'd tried it on your desktop (as the key should be there) and not on your laptop.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

Perhaps i was supposed to type in a password I would like it to be by overtyping on the dots?
You can do that if you like, but then you will have to change the password on any wireless devices that are already enabled.

While you are in the settings page, make sure you are using WPA2 (if possible) as WEP can be broken in under a minute with ease.

    To reiterate:-
If its not written on the bottom of the router, then you will have to log on to your router to find it.

Connect the laptop to the router with an ethernet cable.

You should now be back on line. Then check this link for your router and once logged on, look for your wireless settings.

    Or try this:-
Step 1 Type in the default IP address of the router in your browser (default IP is 192.168.1.1)
Step 2 Log in using the default username and password (username: admin, password: admin)
Step 3 Click on Setup at the top of the screen and then click on the Wireless Setup option on the left.

The network key and wireless key are one and the same thing.

Thanks for this. I tried all this and it did get me to the wireless settings. However, the password was not revelaed as it was a series of dots e.g. ........ representing the number of letters you get in a password.
Your instructions were really good though as I did get precisely to the page you mentioned.

Thats what I would do, go for it, as has been pointed out you'll have to change the network key for any other wireless devices you want to connect to. Don't use a work for the network key rather a random collection of letters.

Your desktop is working, do the ipconfig on that, find out the gateway address, put that into the browser on the desktop, login to router, find the wireless key.

You don't need to use the laptop to do this, as the pc is working

You could then try and let windows handle your wireless network (as opposed to any third party application that you might have installed) and this should get it to work hopefully.

Pleased you got it fixed, off topic but if you want to see other wireless networks in your immediate area and the channels they are on try inSSIDer, a free download.

Its handy if you are getting drop outs due to having strong signals on the same channel as you.
