new to dmp - are there any good HSBC/MBNA stories out there

Am about to make my first payment to CCCS for october, two of my many debts are with HSBC and MBNA. reading the threads on here they seem like the two very worst companies and i was wondering if any one had had a good experience with them at all --- am getting daily/hourly phone calls from them at the moment and i haven't even started the DMP yet !!!

Oh MBNA are great like that. if it gets too much and if they ignore the fact you are telling them you are going through CCCS, then if possible get yourself a cheap pay as you go phone with a different number, phone them (although you wont want too) tell them new number and then switch that phone off and hey presto you only get their nice letters instead.

It stressed me out so much I gave up in the end and pay them £5 extra on top of DMP but I wasn't on here at that time and even though its £5 am annoyed they broke me! So don't promise to give anymore than arranged via the DMP. They do tend to start slowly but once they have received the first 2/3 payments they then realise there is no point chasing/hassling you.
  • Just tell MBNA that you will only speak to them once a week. I did this and if they called anymore I just said it is not convenient right now and hung up.

It did stop when I changed my number though! lol

  • If they ring you they have to ask you some security questions as law if not answered they cannot go any futher about the account!

Just say like I do 'your number as come up as unknown and I am not prepared to give out personal details over the phone, as I see it as a security risk!'

    Leters are fine tell them!

  • Thanks for the tips - don't know what i would do with out this board

have an old mobile knocking about so will buy an sim card and give that out - though they are phoning me at work and am not sure how to deal with that as i share an office and don't want my collegues to know
  • Hi Lowlowlola,

best of luck with your DMP. It makes you feel a bit more in control of what's going on!

HSBC are absolutely useless and have offered me no support whatsoever with my very reasonable DMP offer with them. They only seem to offer people their famous managed loans ie. more debt.

MBNA started off a pain (the phonecalls etc) but did actually freeze interest for 12 months and cancel my arrears as I am making them a reasonable offer.

Remind them of the law concerning harrassment.

Dont buy a SIM card there are lots of free ones available. There are usually a few discussions in the Freebies chat room about them. Here is one for 2 T-mobile sim cards.

MBNA seem to try it on (as it were). My DMP started with the CCCS in July, and I had a letter from MBNA last week saying they would finally accept my offer. No such luck with HSBC yet!

There are just so many horror stories about MBNA on this forum, that they are on the top of my list of companies to avoid, once I am debt-free.
This said, neither MBNA, or HSBC, have any immunity from the laws regarding harrassment, and I would suggest that you look at the DPA and OFT websites for more detailed advice.

I started my DMP in May and after reading stories on here I was dreading hearing from HSBC, we got daily phone calls asking for payment, but once our DMP was set up and payments started to be sent regularly they accepted our reduced payments. Just stick with the DMP and don't let them bully you into paying them anymore, if you could afford to pay more you would be doing so through the cccs.
