I had some stocks happily growing in small pots awaiting the big transfer to a flower bed yet to be created and lo and behold when i popped down to the 'nursery' this morning half of them have been plucked out of their beds and left for dead
Who (or rather What) has commited this dastardly crime??

I have no idea, but the title of the thread just really made me laugh.
Birds trying to get at something in the soil maybe? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
It could well be black birds. They are enthusiastic little diggers in pots and containers, flicking the soil out with their beaks to look for insects, especially at this time of year when they have lots of babies to feed. One year we spread forest bark chips on our flower borders to try and avoid weeding. Never again ! Every morning I would come downstairs and find that a host of blackbirds had flicked the wretched stuff all over the edges of the lawn in their worm and insect hunt. I spent more time with a broom brushing all the stuff off the lawn than ever I did weeding.0

Any one or all three

thanks for the suggestions. I'd ruled out cats because of the way the plants had been discarded, and the chance of them getting past our hound are slim. Blackbirds seems a likely culprit. If I hang a few freebie Cd's in the area might that deter them?0

No, but it'll give them something to listen to while they work.
 If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
