Sainburys Bank

so annoyed by sainburys bank

i closed my credit card account via a phone call

advised by sainburys that to do this i had to pay off my balance which i did (via transfer)

i then asked for them to send me a letter of confirmation that account closed which they did

i then specifically asked if there was anything else i needed to do...advised no....so i then asked that since my account is now closed is my relationship with sainburys bank 100 % over....and i was advised yes

so i cut up my card etc etc

anyway....bank statement through today.......sainsburys bank have taken £100 direct debit

phoned sianburys ..... "not our problem sir you didn't speciffically ask for the direct debit to be cancelled"

so now i have to wait 2 weeks for money to be returned to me

aaarrrrggggghhhhhhh

no apology nothing...its all my fault apparently........

sorry about the rant!!!!

Are you sure you mean Sainsbury's Bank have taken £100?

Or do you mean a firm or organisation with which you agreed to pay £100 by Direct Debit from your Sainsbury's bank A/C has called the money?

Did you not bother to tell whoever that is the details of your new bank?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Did you not delete the sainsburys direct debit from your account? I am able to log into my online banking and cancel direct debits from there.

Is there nothing your bank can do to get your money back quicker for you?

yeah sorry for not making it clear (it was a bit of a rant)

the £100 was a monthly direct debit from my current account to pay off my sainburys bank credit card

i stupidly assumed that because i closed my account and cancelled my credit card that they would stop the direct debit........silly me

according to the lady i spoke to even if you close your account and cancel your card your account is still open in some way (not sure how that is ..... she coudn't explain it to me...for me to understand........just seems stupid to me)

Could you not request your bank refunds the money under the Direct Debit Guarantee? You closed the account, therefore they should not have taken any money. This is surely logical to anyone. It doesn't matter how they dress it up, they have taken money they were not entitled to, but of course they are now earning interest on it instead of you.

thats what i thought...but apparently (according to sainsburys bank anyway) when your accoun is closed its not 100% closed ...what this means i've absolutely no idea

is it just a sainburys bank / bank of scotland thing
  • I happen to have a direct debit mandate on my desk and the guarantee (which is common to all banks) states
If an error is made by .... or your Bank or Building Society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.
If you didn't owe anything on the credit card they took the money in error so should refund the money immediately.
