Help......What do I claim?

I recently married last month. Returned from honeymoon and husband lost his job so is now claiming job seekers allowance.

I work 25 hours a week and earn £725 a month after tax.

I have a son who is 6 years old and lives with us.

Husband has a daughter who is 5 and lives with her mother who has recently put in a claim for maintenance.

We privately rent a house for £675 per month.

We don't receive and tax credits or benefits at present.

What or which benefits do we claim? I heard if you claim housing benefit you can't claim tax credits.

Please could anyone advise.

You can claim housing benefit and tax credits. Tax credits (and any other money you have coming in) will be take into account for housing benefit.

  • Yes you can claim housing benefit with tax credits, they will just take of a certain amount off the housing benefit for the tax credits (I get tax credits and HB I am self -employed part time), it would also depend on how much you have coming in with the job-seekers. Go to the CAB or speak to a benefits specialist at the local council, they are there to help.

OP, if you enter your figures into www.entitledto.co.uk if will give you an estimate of your entitlement. When you contact Tax Credits ask to be assessed on this years income, not the previous year.

CAB and Welfare Rights are overwhelmed at present, your case does appear simple so you shouldn't need to bother them.
    Gone ... or have I?

Do you get maintenance for your son?

    Do you claim child benefit?

Maintenance will be assessed as £5 per week from his JSA
