A book? I agree with the others about the value. even though you could afford more, maybe £20 is more appropriate.

does he like the theatre? tickets to a performance would be nice and not 'too' personal.
I also suggested this on another thread..........does he have an interest such as fishing or metal detecting? a subscription to a specialist magazine is always welcome if you dont already subscribe.
if he is an active guy then an 'experience day' can be very welcome look on tinternet or argos do them as well.
as you have only been seeing him a couple of months then its wise not to get jewellery, unless you KNOW he loves gold/silver chains but definately NOT a ring! guys tend to take that the wrong way!
good luck and I hope this is the start of something wonderful for you.

Going out for a nice meal, with perhaps a surprise of a hotel room (depending on the stage of your relationship obviously;))

If he's active and up for adventure, what about an indoor skydive? I did this for my OH, and put the tickets in his card!

....for both of you if you dare!!! (they take tesco vouchers too!)

Hi well i have been with dh for 11 years, married for almost 2 and have no idea what to do for his 40th (in nov) so you have started me panicking again! I had the top gear show booked in my head and a weekend away in london but he said one day he didnt fancy London so i ended up asking him if he'd like it and he said he'd rather the money go towards a family holiday..so that's that out! although we are now going to london anyway in Nov but for my grandads birthday!..i thought about a watch as he has seen one for £300 so a lot but if i had it engraved a lovely gify BUT again he would go mad with price and ide rather he chose it..days out he fancies a tank museum so thats a thought..he doesnt need anything so impossible to buy for..a party for him which he fancied..just feel a party is a slight cop out for being 40..hope that doesn't sound horrid! Have a great idea for our anniversary but wont put on her incase he noses!..but with the 40th and my grandad (who will be 90) maybe its a bit much..
Aaaah i dunno i'll be watching this thread!

Well - I took my OH - who is a massive Miami Dolphins fan - to Miami to watch the game of the season (vs New York patriots) for his 40th..but we'd been going out for 4 years..

However, when i met him I was in serious financial poo (just discovered MSE). I'd only been going out with him a few months when it was his birthday. I thought I'd get him a watch - and did a bit of research and bid £60 for a watch on ebay. I got the watch for pennies less than a tenner. He won't wear it because he keeps it for special occasions. It has now stopped and every time he says he's going to get a battery I divert him - because I'm damn sure it's stopped because it's s*&t!

I agree with the other posters - something small and meaningful will mean far more. That blasted watch haunts me!
