hi everyone,i have a question about the cartons of longlife milk.
are they ok for children?? or do they need fresh milk?
my two daughters are 3.5 and 18 months old....they both just have one cup of milk last thing at night and milk on their cereal in the mornings and the occasional milkshake.
me and my husband use the longlife milk as its cheaper and easier to stock up on for the whole month and you dont run out!! but at the moment we still but fresh whole milk for the littlies.............i dont want to just change them over to longlife if it could be harmful. but now they are on so little milk if its ok i would like to.
so does anyone know?

what does Long life milk actually taste like? does it taste like fresk milk or the old sterilised milk you used to get years ago in bottles?0

I use longlife milk for conveinance - it's also slightly cheaper.
I can't tell the difference but then again I don't drink it by itself - it gets used on cereal, in sauces, baking etc.0 -
I don't like fresh milk and use long life skimmed milk on cereal as it doesn't really taste like milk. Not sure if that helps or evens makes sense LOL!0

i always got told that a child under 5 shouldn't have skimmed milk. i personally wouldn't use it at the mo as my children are 3 ( in oct ) and 1. they have 3 drinks of whole milk a day plus milk on cereal. i use 4 pints of whole milk a day on average. but it a cost i'm not worried about while they are so young.when my son turns 2 then they will both be on semi skimmed.
but when they are older then yes i will be giving them the long life milk. i personally perfer it in tea and coffee. on it's own to drink i find it horrible. but then i'm not really a milk drinking.
sorry to waffle on but i hope this helps.0 -

I think the taste depends on the individual. I am not keen, but tolerate it in coffee, and could probably tolerate it on cereal (especially porridge), but nobody likes it "neat" to drink. DH doesn't like it in coffee. Nobody notices it in cooking.0

Jcr's right children under 5 should not have skimmed milk, they need the fat in either semi-skimmed or whole. I think toddlers should have whole.
But, you can get long-life milk in all varieties, the only trouble is I don't think it's cheaper than fresh unless you go for the value one (or smartprice or whatever) and that only seems to be available as skimmed.0 -
just to clarify i would get longlife whole milk for them............it would be a bit cheaper as i would bulk buy from makro.0
