Do BT no fixed term contracts call plans still exist?

Last year I changed my BT call plan to Unlimited Anytime. I made sure that I had the one with no rolling contract,( even though they tried conning me into it when the confirmation letter arrived) Now I no longer need so many 'free' inclusive phone calls and want to get back to 'my pay for what you use' no rolling contract plan. However when I go to the website to change my calling plan everything has a 12month contract to it. Ive been with BT for donkeys years, and have no plans to change provider, but I object to tying myself to them for twelve months at a time.

Are there some tarrifs hidden away somewhere in the small print. Or have they changed the rules when I wasn't looking. ( they wouldn't do that would they  )
Thanks, Alison

  • I think... when you change a term of your contract this results in a new contract. In effect the prior contract is terminated and a new one begins. Sneaky, eh?

Sneaky doesn't even begin to describe them! I think I may have found the small print that Im looking for. Ill check it out more when Ive recovered from my night shift. I remember last time when I changed plans i couldn't do it online i had to ring up and speak to a 'real' person and make sure every other sentence was "I dont want a fixed term contract" then I got a letter welcoming me to my new call plan with 12month rolling contract! So I had to phone again, they were very apologetic and there "must have been a mistake" Hah, likely story.

If you change from Anytime to the Free weekend plan (without any sort of rolliing 12 month element) it will probably be considered a 'new' contract so will have the initial 12 month term, but after that it should become month to month,
OCOM has come up with some new rules about early contract termination so it you decide to move your calls to another provider then it shouldnt incur a big cancellation fee, it may be sneeky but most if not all CP's will take any change to a contract as an excuse to start a new 12 month deal..probably too late now but at the time you called if you said you were looking to move your line rental to someone else, they probably would have offered a £36 discount on a years line rental (£2 off per month) in return for a new 12 month contract, but you probably have the 12 months now anyway without the benefit of the £2/month off

They do offer call plans without any minimum term for existing customers out of contract who wish to downgrade. You need to speak to them to change.

Unlimited Weekend Plan – standard plan

The Unlimited Weekend Plan no extra charge is available to eligible residential customers, with no minimum term

Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan – standard plan

The Unlimited Evening & Weekend £2.99 a month Plan is available to eligible residential customers with no minimum period.

Unlimited Anytime Plan – standard plan

This £ 5.99 a month plan is no longer available for new supply.

I wish telecoms would get away from this 12 month and 18 month minimum contracts and rolling contracts.

You might need to move house or move to a different country or your financial circumstances might change and then you are stuck with buying out the contract.

When are they going to start making rules that favour the customer for a change ?

Ofcom has just forced them all to reduce the exit penalties, to leave the basic BT Weekend package early will cost only £2 per month of unexpired term.
