Hi guys!
Just been for my morning wander around the garden and went to have a good look at the peas. Some of the pods are 2-3" long and I tried having a 'feel'
to see if I could feel how big the peas are. But the pods are rock-hard ?!?! It's like they're made of rock, literally, I can't press them at all. Is this normal? lol.
I don't know if it's related or not, but, I also noticed yesterday that the stems on most of the french beans are rock-hard aswell, like they would snap dead easy. Right at the top they are still soft and bendy though, because I'm still able to direct them around the mesh at the top.
Don't know if the two are related, or even if they're problems or not... any thoughts?!

Hi emptypockets
I'm sure I read somewhere on here (probably the newbie thread) that when pea pods are hard, without any 'give', then they're ready to be picked. It's my first year growing peas so I have been doing this and it's right - my pods that are hard have had full sized peas. I also read that you shouldn't just leave them as the peas will become hard, not tender.
Can't help with the french bean query as my lonesome french bean plant is yet to bear any beans :rotfl:

Well stone me, you're right: I just picked one and sure enough there were six beautiful, sweet peas which had to be eaten quickly

... How stupid do I feel now having asked this question???

I am glad the pea's are okay, as my first thought was they might be getting too old. If your beans are rock hard and snappy, to me that sounds like a very good sign, you don't want a floppy bean!0

Re: the beans, I don't mean the actual bean pods are hard, I mean the plant stems themselves..."Your life is what your thoughts make it"
