Teachers Pay Freeze

Evening all,
Sorry if this is in the wrong section!
Does anybody know if despite the public sector pay freeze, teachers will be able to move up the pay scale?
My girlfriend is in her second year teaching so earns around £22,000 (M2 grade) but we're not sure if next year she will progress to M3 and the associated salary.

Given that schools have had a major cut in their budgets - I asked OH the same thing last night. He's due to move up to U2 in September - his response was 'considering we're missing the budgets for 3 teachers now, not going to mention it and see what happens'. Whether it's just the cost of living allowances that will be scrapped, or the progression through the pay grades for experience - I don't know. If it's progression that is cut, I can see there being a teacher shortage again really soon just as there was about 7-10 years ago.0

Well if that is the case I will advise the OH to find another job aswell - £22000 just isn't worth it for the amount of effort she puts in and the stress levels!0 -
Your increments will still apply, but not the cost of living rise.0

It should only affect the annual cost of living increases (other types of increases are separate) - those earning under 21K get £250 extra for 2 years, those above nothing.0

Not too fussed about the cost of living increase, that was to be expected. Had the same for the past two years in my job anyway!0 -
We were told that cost of living may apply, but increments would be frozen.

I see absolutely no reason why you would not move up the scale, that is a set salary and you move up it at a set period of time. I would assume what it means is that there will be no overall rise in the salaries e.g 2% rise or whatever. Think the unions would have a thing or two to say if they stopped you moving up the scale! I can't move any higher without taking on extra responsibility which I'm not prepared to do, so there'll be no rise at all for me!0

Well, there's a big difference between being on the MPS and the UPS scales - OH is looking at it as though he's happy with the salary at the moment, school treats him great, headteacher is fantastic to work for, and it's a fantastic school. Weigh those things up in comparison to his past school......and being on M6 there.....he's really not too fussed about the pay increase and will forego it along with others if necessary to ensure that they can maintain staffing levels. Currently their budget means they have the money for three teachers less than what they consider fully staffed - so he won't be leaving over increments being frozen - more money in a carp school wouldn't be worth the move and stress!0

They would have to move you up the scale if it applies because it's contractual. It should only apply to the cost of living increase.0

Will you please say the same to my brother? Even though he had a "real job":D:D outside the public sector before he became a teacher, he's since become detached from reality and is now constantly banging on about how poor he'll be even though he only teaches 3 lessons a day and gets paid twice what he did for his last fulltime job.0
