Wet food, wet food, wet food.

Whenever I see a cat with cystitis, I recommend that they switch to wet food (if not already on it) and up the water intake however they can: water fountains, different types and locations of water bowls, adding extra water to the food etc. The latest thinking on this complex condition is that the bladder's protective lining is defective, allowing the cat's naturally very concentrated urine to irritate the bladder wall, resulting in inflammation and pain. Diluting the urine down by increasing water intake makes it less irritant to the bladder and can provide relief.
