Problems with DVD-RW drive

Options
TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632M ATA Device in a HP laptop

Windows Vista Installed

Been having problems with the DVD drive

Sometimes it will work fine and normally

other times it will not:

1) When inserting a disc with something on it such as purchased dvd/music it won't recognise that a disc is in the drive - if from my computer you click dvd drive it says 'please insert a disc into the drive' - the drive spins but makes strange noises like it isn't spinning properly

2) When insterting a blank disc sometimes it won't recognise it

other times it will recognise a blank disc - and will allow you to burn it with nero/roxio/imgburn/windows etc. and will show a successful burn

however after supposedly burning it if you put the disc back in either it will show as being a blank disc or the drive will not recognise a disc is insterted and show 'please insert a disc into the drive' (If you put the disc into another computer it basically shows up as a dud/coaster - 0MB free/0MB available)

Tried today to burn an ISO with IMGBurn - it showed that it burned fine but when it wanted to verify it kept saying - 'device not ready - logical unit is in the process of becoming ready'

this happens with any brand of writable cd(verbatim/maxell/sony)/any purchased dvd/cd

However it doesn't happen all the time some days the drive works fine but most of the time it doesn't (though I don't use it very much)

any ideas? I have tried google but having difficulty solving the problem

Device Manager shows 'This device is working properly.'

The device is detected and visible in windows at all times

I have also tried the Microsoft FixIt program which hasn't helped it just says insert readable or writable media

It checked for these problems:

Is the drive a few years old or has it had a fair amount of use? I have a LiteOn DVD-RW drive that started to behave oddly at the start of the year. I eventually tracked it down to a rubber band in the tray mechanism - the tray would close but the band had stretched and didn't have enough friction to raise the laser's carriage. So from the outside it looked okay and the PC thought the drive was fine, but it made strange noises and couldn't read the disk. I've now replaced the band and it looks as though it's okay.
