  • Yes, eating much more healthily now I'm back to cooking properly - no more chips/takeaways/pizzas. Only problem - I'm putting weight on  - despite more exercise. Must be the lack of pre-set portions, and the fact it tastes soooo much better!

  • Agree definately! Had a look in my freezer on payday and went to supermarket and bought food enough for meals rest of the month - I spent £8.25! This doesn't include lunches though but still cheap I reckon for 30 meals! (just for me!)

It is cheaper to eat things that are not ready made meals.

Granted I do use budget jar of pasta sauces and tinned soups. But that is so husband can have something to eat at min fuss when he has at home after night shift.

That is why it grates me when people go how can you manage on a £100 a month for two. And are snooty about it as well. Easy because we eat simple meals and don't buy lots of rubbish like fizzy drinks. Which are not staple they are treat.

It is easy. People seem to think I leave off chips. Don't thinks so. We don't have takeouts very often. And my husband had sausage and chips the other night for the first time ages and pinched some of his chips. But he bought them from his own money.

Mind you I have been on a budget of a £100 a month for food for the last 8 years. And I need to loose weight.

  • Calley people think by me spending only £15 that I don't eat at all! I have a super high metabolism and as a result my weight never goes above 9st 3lb (i'm 5'8") so even though i eat like a horse, everyone thinks I have an eating disorder! I think I eat really well though! I have lots of stodgy food, caseroles and the like and lot's of pasta and oily fish and stuff and plenty of snacks in between!

  • I too eat more healthily since spending less! People are amazed when I tell them how little I spend on food but what I make out of it! I definitely feel better for it too :D

  • To be honest, I found it a bit difficult at first to cut down on my food budget, & still eat as healthily as I like too, because I eat mostly organic food, & am also gluten-intolerant, so cheap staples like bread & pasta etc are out, for me. I also used to buy a lot of pricey 'gourmet' organic stuff - basically readymeals, but with even bigger price tags!

But after a period of adjustment, I've managed it. I've cut right down on the pre-made stuff (although still have the occasional treat), & force myself to make meals from scratch (not fun as I hate cooking & food prep, but this means I keep my meals simple, which saves money in itself). I feel healthier for eating simply too. We get a weekly organic veg box, & hadn't realised before how much fresh fruit & veg I'd buy & then throw away, so I now make sure I eat everything in the box (unless it's something I hate!).

I still spend more than I would if I didn't eat organic, but I'm only willing to sacrifice so much, and I've pretty much halved my previous food budget, so I'm pleased with that. (Having said that, the fact that my strict budget is temporary makes it easier - when I've repaid my loan, I'll be splurging a bit more on food again, although probably not at my previous levels! :D )
