I need to to create a tiny small network at home that i can share, about 1gb.

What is the cheapest way to do this? Ive seen you can purchase massive network hard drives but i dont need all that space.

Will this adapter work? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-LAN-RJ45-Ethernet-Network-Adaptor-Connector-/300426669957?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item45f2d32f85

I was thinking of plugging that into my router and a 1 gb memory stick?

    no it won't.

you either need a nas enclosure, a usb to nas device, a media player, games console, or router with usb file sharing ability, or hang it off a working pc and setup file sharing. If it's on a flash drive, why not pass it around when needed, or just copy it to the pc's who require access to the data?

What are you trying to share, to where/what?

    That won't work.

A NAS enclosure would usually support a HDD but some also have USB ports.

A quick search on google shopping using the terms NAS USB throws up a suitable device for just over £20 - this one shows as cheapest but I've never heard of the seller and there are other more well known ones - http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?product=MTE-01061

My router has an USB port to share any USB stick and hard disk. Otherwise use FreeNAS on an old computer.

That's a false economy. If left running 24x7 which would be normal for a NAS device it is likely to cost ~ £100 a year to run. A proper NAS enclosure would cost a fraction of that.

True, rather get a cheap network drive.

Or get an old clunker laptop off Ebay.

Which apart from probably using more power would probably cost more and take up more space....

A possible answer if you already had one though.

Update. In the end it has cost me £30 for a 160gb network drive. I purchased a NAS enclosure for £25 from ebay and a 160gb hard drive for £5. Im pleased with the overall result :)
