Why not just make a note (a 'repeat monthly' on Google calendar - so you get an email - is the easy way) reminding yourself to make a few 10 second calls one weekend each month (so they're 'free') to 020 7043 1320 (a geographical speaking clock number)?

A minute to set up the email reminder and then less than half a minute's work each month.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

If you dont use the phoneline for phone calls, incoming or outgoing then call BT and get them to remove caller display, then if you dont make calls it wont result in a charge for caller display ( because you
wont have caller display)...if you want to keep caller display then make a couple of calls (via BT) per month, moving to another provider may remove the requirement to make calls, but not all providers give you caller display for free.

I have not been at home for 6 weeks due to family circumstances,in fact I'm 350 miles away from home caring for a family member.I got my online phone bill from BT and was a bit gobsmacked to see the penalty charge .

After phoning them up to query the charge of £2.70 for not making 2 calls,I was told by a jobsworth called Amo in the BT Billing dept that I should have left a key with someone to go in to my house and make 2 calls!! I really couldn't believe my ears and said so,has the world gone mad????

Maybe I should have said put the gas fire full on incase I get charged for not using enough gas and leave all the lights on or Scottish Power will penalise me for not using electricity,oh and better leave Sky on too,I have to watch 2 films a month oh and by the way leave all the taps running, can't have the Water Board charging me for under use of my utility in this drought.......!!!!!!
