A couple of questions regarding train tickets..

Hi guys

Love this site. Have a strange question. I'm thinking of going to manchester at the weekend, and have two tickets that are both open return legs of a ticket that I haven't used yet. I live in Hemel Hempstead. The two tickets are Manchester to Chester, and Chester to Hemel Hempstead. Both valid tickets. If I take the train from Manchester straight to Hemel does providing these two tickets make my journey valid?

    With those tickets you have to travel via Chester.

    I.e. Manchester to Chester then to Hemel Hempstead.

    To be precise, the train you are on must STOP at Chester, you do not have to alight there.

    If your train from Manchester to Hemel stops at Crewe (not all go that way) you don't need to go to Chester - you can go via Crewe.

    Reason being that Manchester to Chester via Crewe is a permitted route and as you have open tickets you can go that way and can stop short/start early.

    Wouldn't be allowed with advance tickets though
