Getting roofing quotes

Our roof is leaking in several different places, depending on which way the wind's blowing, and the water is possibly travelling along inside, because one set of drips is coming through in the middle of the house.

I suspect we need the whole roof replacing, given its age and what the survey said when we moved in 7 years ago.

I've just had a call from someone I've asked to give a quote, and he kept asking if it was near the chimneys - which one of the leaks might be but two of them most certainly aren't! Then he asked if we'd got lead or zinc flashings, and I have NO idea!

But he seemed to think he could quote just by looking at the house from the outside - is that really possible? He didn't even ask about our loft access, which is a doddle as it's been converted.
