Painting Bathroom

Options
DH and I moved into our house about 18months ago and DH painted the bathroom but I don't think he used bathroom paint. The entire bathroom was painted with bright blue gloss and he painted several layers of a beige colour (it's nice honest!) over the gloss.

Now this paint has crackled if you look at it closely but it's not peeling. DH is going away with work and I want to paint it as a surprise for when he comes back.

I've been trying to find out how best to prepare the walls for a new coat of paint but I find different opinions. Some places just say paint it, some say wash it with sugar soap, some say sand it down.

Can anyone give me some tips?

Many thanks

  • My approach would be to rough the surface to give a better key for the top coat, apply some thinned down PVA glue to give a better seal over the gloss and then apply multiple coats of emulsion.

There is a product called "Liquid Sanding" that is surposed to give a good key over gloss paint without all the asnding and dust. Never used it myself but might be worth a try.

if its got oil paint on the walls then i would remove it all, or paint it again with similar paint.
water based paint on top of oil paint is rarely a great idea/success.
    Get some gorm.
