Paypal/debit card fraud

Just a quickie, really, my debit card and paypal account were used fraudulently last week Paypal have done their investigating, and the money is showing as refunded onto my card. I emailed asking how long it would take to reappear in my bank account, and what I can glean from 2 very long, detailed emails in reply is that it could take up to 30 days. Has anyone any experience of something similar becaues this sounds way too long to me (and I'm blimming broke  )

PayPal say thirty days, because that’s what the card networks, like Visa, say could be the worst case delay, once PayPal have started the refund. In practice, it’s extremely unlikely to take anywhere near that long. This is just the same as when you pay for goods. The transaction could take weeks to turn up on your account. However, you’d normally expect it to be showing after two or three working days.
If you’re facing a real financial problem, you should talk to your bank. You can explain that PayPal have acknowledged the transaction was unauthorised, and ask your bank to help until the money reappears.古池や蛙飛込む水の音0 -
In the long-term, I'd strongly suggest you set up a credit card with PayPal - that way if it goes t***s up you don't lose your own money, only the credit card company's, & they are then a bit more concerned!!0

Thank you both so much, that's put my mind at rest somewhat. I tried appealing to my bank's better nature immediatley, alfie, just asking for an extension to my overdraft until the funds are returned, but, er, no. Cheers, Halifax. And John, good idea, and obviously the sensible way to go, but I don't have a credit card (and wouldn't get one!). At least now I understand a bit better how it works.
Thank you both again for taking the time out.******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0 -
Just to add, please review your online security to stop this happening again. As your account has been compromised make sure you have changed all associated passwords. Also read the first couple of posts on the sticky paypal/ebay spoof thread on this forum and make sure you fully understand how to keep yourself safe from phishers.
Luckily this time it seems to be being sorted out quite quickly (a month is very good!) but it could have been much worse, so take great care in future not to let this happen again.

Thankyou soo, I changed everything immediately, cancelled paypal direct debit and the bank cards too. It's put me off paypal alltogether, I have to say, though. And 30 days to refund money that's been sent back to my card?? Why???******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0

You were lucky to be quoted 30 days, banks are getting less and less pro active in repaying people who have compromised their own security.
Paypal is as secure as any other online institution, in fact probably safer than a couple of the bigger high street banks who have admitted being hacked in the past few months. If you take all normal online security actions you will be fine but the onus is on the user to keep themselves safe.
