Carpet underlay query

Options
This may sound like a right cowboy question but it's my first experience with laying carpet so please bear with me!

Our house has relatively new 7mm underlay down un the spare bedroom, but we'd prefer it to be thicker. So can we put another layer of 7mm on top and them lay the carpet, or do we have to take it up and lay a 10mm/11mm underlay instead?

Thanks:j

Pull it up a lay a new underlay. I recommend the Cloud 9 9mm underlay, super stuff :)

You may find that putting a second layer on will make it too thick to fit the carpet securely. Fitters sometimes need to use two rows of carpet grippers with a thick underlay like Cloud 9 to make sure the carpet stays put.

We have a roll of Duralay Step 65 - will that be suitable for a 2nd bedroom/study?

Putting an underlay on top of another is not advisable, the fitter would struggle stretching the carpet onto the grippers, it would also tend to creep and come loose. Laying the Duralay Step 65 on it's own would be the better option, the downside to this is that it's a basic underlay with little or low comfort levels but fine for a Second Bedroom/Study. It's all down to your personal preference, my advice would be to upgrade the underlay.

  • Question is study OR 2nd bedroom?

If it's a study I'd use a rubber crumb underlay, as with office chairs you don't want it soft. If it's a bedroom, use what you like, but only one layer of it (you can get clouud 9 type at 11mm thick too)

Well one 15m2 roll will do both the 2nd bedroom AND the study so we want it to be suitable for both
