Try to scan again in safe mode. If the anti virus is not up-to-date, then boot in "safe mode with networking" and update it first.0 -
try to boot into safe mode
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
and then try system restore
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084
(above is for XP but same for vista/win 7)
to go back to a date when it last worked (no data lost)
if that fails then
try downloading this
http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html
and burn to cd , then boot the laptop from the CD and scan itEx forum ambassador

could be hard drive error , chkdsk might help which can be run from the windows cd , support.microsoft.com/kb/3152650

Have just ran chkdsk and found nothing0

You were at least able to run chkdsk so that's a positive thing. The PC didn't crash during it, which indicates that it's PROBABLY a problem with your windows install. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

Chkdsk started up after i restarted, so before windows had loaded. So i guess you could be right. Does this mean i have to re-install windows?0

You could try a windows repair, get your windows disc stick it in, boot to cd-rom and when it ask's f you would like to install windows it should give you an option to repair, usually this solves 2-10 of my problems so not guaranteed but something to try before you wipe the lot.
If you have data you want off the machine the most basic way i can think for you to do it is to stick it in -
A) A docking station if SATAAttach it to another machine
