Phone Contract Application

Hi guys, I tried applying for a phone contract today at vodafone. However, my application was declined. They kept my photocopied passport picture page and a copy of my bank statement with all my details on it. Are they allowed to do that, and may I request to have it back? Is it common practice for the network company to keep your details like that? I am just rather concerned, as the guys working there seemed rather dodgy.

The ICO state that under the DPA, personal data should only be kept if relevant to the reason it is being kept and for only as long as it is necessary.

Yeah i can see the purpose of retaining passport photocopy (in case she reapplies using another name or someone else tries to apply using her details) but i cant think of one good reason they would need to keep her bank statement. They could simply note her address and make a note on the file that they had seen a bank statement as confirmation.
TBH i'm just paranoid though, especially when people ask for my financial data
