You should be able to get 3 x 2.5mm into a socket terminal (just). Don't twist them together - it adds to the bulk and just encourages them to snap off. Make sure the screw is all the way back (but don't loose it) and all three wires are nice & straight. Patience is my only advice (but then I do this day in, day out). Don't see many DSO's with two terminals for each of Live & Neutral, but many have 2 earth locations now - having said that the CPC (earth) in a 2.5mm cable is smaller than 2.5mm C.S.A. so it's easier for earths.

Maybe have a look at the TLC site to see if you get any clues. https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk

i always leave the tails straight. and sometimes i use long nose pliers to insert them. to give them the final push in.

the biggest problem i encounter is that sparkys never leave enough spare cable to play with.
changing sockets with different terminal locations can be a bloody nightmare.

The terminal holes are supposed to accommodate 3x2.5mm cables, but it can be quite difficult to get the terminal screws to keep them all secure. It's a question of perseverance I'm afraid. I always used to leave too much cable, but that could also make the job difficult. I never found an easy answer to the problem.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    Diyers do that, not electricians.

It was always frowned upon to twist cables above 1.5mm sq as they snap easy.

Can't remember if it was regs or guidance years ago

With ormus on length of cable ref diy/pro.

Could be a physiological defence mechanism,

:D if you foul up , with extra cable you get a second chance ! ( or that just me ? )

Believe me, the others are carp... Maybe repeated screwing in had damaged the thread? Like anything, the more you practise the better you get which is why diyers struggle sometimes with things that us sparks find straightforward!

You got there in the end though!

  • Why is it that modern cables are so very stiff?
It can be a nightmare tryng to twist them round inside boxes
Can't they make plastic insulation more pliable these days?
