There's something like that being developed at the University of Surrey at the moment. (I think I'm allowed to say that!) 3D TV will only be useful in the home when it can be viewed with no artefacts from anywhere in the room and not just from a central position.
Also, while the concept of 3dtv may not be new, more recent compression codecs mean that the extra depth information can be physically distributed to the mass market at a reasonable cost...0
