IMO, if you're a crap driver, CC will save you fuel. If you already know how to drive efficiently, then CC will use more in comparison.

Watch the top gear episode where clarkson drives a V8 audi diesel. From memory, using CC used 42mpg, manually used 45mpg. Makes sense really, you can read the road ahead, CC can't.

No idea as it is totally hypothetical. I don't have cruise control, but common courtesy would come in to play.
    There are 3 choices

1 Reduce your speed and stay behind
    2. Accelerate sufficiently to overtake in a timely manner and then pull back in and reduce your speed back to 70 (Get the police, you will be doing 75 for about 15 secs)
    3. Really pee the other driver off and sit abreast of him for the next 1/2 mile.

It is always possible to think up situations that can make something unworkable. 2MPH difference means that the car passes in a reasonable time. Literally crawling past is not acceptable and shows that the driver has a total disregard for other road users.

I stand by my assertion that the normal overtaking rules still apply and the motorway ones are amplification. If not what would you do on a dual carriageway? It is neither single carriageway nor motorway.
In the intro to the Highway Code it states that most rules, with very few exceptions, apply to all roads. The official definition being '‘any highway and any other road to which the public has access".

Sound advice, get ahead quickly, even if a few miles over the speed limit, (which is not the one shown on your speedo), pull back in well ahead of the other car then we can all get on with our driving
    ;)

Should be taking delivery of a car with cruise control next week so I'll be able to report my findings - never had it before :rotfl:

0.5, or even 1mpg is irrelevent if the driver puts others at risk by his/her actions

  • Try Adaptive Cruise Control.. slows you down if a car slows infront, then takes you back up to the set speed when said car has moved out of the way.. Great in the 50mph limits on the motorway, set it to 50mph then no need to do anything when people slow to 45 to go past the cameras..

I don't really buy into this, but just shows how numbers stack up..

Fair enough. I wrote that whilst trying to do my normal job as well so never did the calculations.
