You have to ditch any bottled water before security, but you can buy gallons off it airside.

    If you want to, yes.

Mee - lip balm is fine - I checked when we flew last month. I also came back with a tube of antihistamine cream in my hand luggage that I must have put in there at some point, but without realising (thought I had put it into the hold baggage) and it wasn't picked up.

I am surprised at the knives, last time we flew (a couple of years ago now) we had a knife, fork & spoon set for our then 18 month old & the knife got taken off us by a very apologetic lady! You know the type that they use when learning that are so blunt that they hardly cut anything!

New dft regulations say you can take knives up to 3 inches airside now so a mach 3 isnt going to be a problem
Phatbear, do you have a link to an airport/gov site that shows this (not disagreeing) so that if I take my multitool in my hand luggage (which I always used to) it wont get confiscated.

You cant take any bladed object over 6cm airside, and therefore anything below 6cms you can have, and heres the link.

    http://www.stanstedairport.com/portal/page/Stansted%5EGeneral%5EAirport+information%5EStansted+security%5EHand+baggage/c23cb8874d9b7210VgnVCM10000036821c0a____/448c6a4c7f1b0010VgnVCM200000357e120a____/#banned

Also note it mentions tools however in this instance it says anything with a blade or handle over 6cms, so its up to you if you want to risk it, amazing that they are under an illusion that anything smaller than 6cms cant hurt someone, ive been known to do a lot of damage with my small weapon before now.

If you are gonna go for it I suggest having a print out of this page as most of the "unique individuals" who work for security havent got a clue about their own rules.

i know it says stansted but it will be the same for any baa airport, as its a dft regulation.

Thanks Phatbear, I note Luton (http://www.london-luton.co.uk/en/content/3/80/security.html) are saying there are no changes to rules.
