Aldi DVD player & 160 GB HDD Recorder (merged)

  • Am interested in this as have a HD compatible Dell TV with a DVI+HDCP interface (from last Autumn MSE tip).

Obviously would need an appropriate HDMI<->DVI cable/adapter- not included with the player but am wondering what the conclusion of the German review meant re DVI.

Wonder if any German speaker can clarify the conclusion which mentions two things in the negatives (via Google automated translation):
    - insufficient HDMI configuration options
    - for DVI adaptation thereby uselessly

    Original german review:
    - ungenügende HDMI-Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten
    - für DVI-Adaption dadurch unbrauchbar

Suspect/hope it may just mean 'no DVI interface' which would be fine. Of course being an Aldi product will be covered by the 1yr satisfaction guarantee but don't want to waste a c£7 on HDMI-DVI cable to find it useless.
  • This might be an obvious question but wrt the card reader on this player, do you reckon it can let you play divx movies etc off an sd card for example or is it literally just for pictures? So then i wont have to burn films to cd/dvd anymore and maybe i could use a 2gb sd card etc. If so I think ill get one, not bothered about the HDMI stuff cos my telly's too old anyway

    thanks

    Looks ok but no freeview
Big pricedrop from last year so maybe a freeview version to come. Pointless having HDR without freeview *and* EPG selection of recordings when analogue switchoff start is only 2 years off.

Are there *any* reasonably priced reliable dual format DVD/HDR/freeview boxes yet?

There's a Pioneer box you can get for £275 delivered...
Ah! Good old trusty beer... I hope you never change.

    Found the details... it's a Pioneer DVR440HXS

£275 is still too expensive for me though... they're sure to drop in price over the next 12 months though as more machines become available.

The last dvd player Aldi did with a SD/MMC and USB inetrface played music, movies and pictures straight from the card. The USB was only 1.1, but still fast enough for Xvid films.

I, likewise, thought about doing movies straight from cards as, being a teacher, I often just want to show little clips of things that are relevant to a lesson. The reality is that for the few pence a cd costs, it's far faster to write onto them then onto a card (and it stops the kids seeing what else I've got on there when the directory comes up on the tv!)

The second sentence, unbrauchbar, means unuseable, so it is therefore unuseable for DVI Adaption, whatever that is. First sentence translation spot on. Hope this helps....
