Wireless Router - Connected but cannot find server

I have read through loads of the wireless links on the 'stickies' but would appreciate any help anyone can give. I am desperate!!

I do know a bit about PCs (could be a little knowledge is a dangerous thing).

I have a PC connected to a D LInk ADSL router DSL G604T (ISP is BT Broadband) via Ethernet. Also in the house we have 2 wireless laptops. Up until a couple of days ago everything was mostly fine. All computers could browse the web and send e-mails.

But not now!! I don't use the PC much any more, as we use the laptops. All computers say that they are connected, with excellent connections, and the icons all look the same as before. However, every web site I try to reach comes up with the message 'Cannot find server'.

As all computers have the same messages I think the problem has to be with the router itself or the phone line.

I have reset the router, and started the connections from scratch using the web based interface, although this is of course not actually on the internet. Nothing else has changed, it just all stopped working. I am now getting very annoyed with it!! The BT Broadband status line says there isn't any problems in my area. The phone works fine, and all phones have filters.

Help...........please. I could contact the helplines, either BT or D LInk, but I Know they will want me to go through everything I have already tried. And they talk to you as though you are stupid. Perhaps I am, but they don't have to talk to me as though I am.

I did try pinging last night, but have to admit I'm not sure what I am looking for.

I am logging on at work now, should have gone home Hour and a half ago, but am desperately trying to find out what my problem is. So Iwon't be able to reply to this thread until tomorrow, unless by some miracle it all works normally when I go home. If only.............

Hope this all makes sense to someone, and that you will take pity on me. You can tell I'm getting desparate now can't you. ;)

there are some diagnostics towards the end of these.

I'd forget about wireless for now, and use the wired connection for testing.
If it doesn't work wired, it suggests your isp, or password or vpi/vci (usually 0/38) settings. There should be some indication in the router config screen whether you are connected to your isp or not.

    Does this work? http://66.249.93.99/

if so it is a dns issue.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

I have the very same router. It can be a swine to set up and a bit iffy. One thing that kept catching me out is that you must save all changes on the router web page, then restart the AP after any changes. This must be done through the tools tab on server 'site'.
Also, just turning the blessed thing off (completely unplugged from both bt socket and mains) for 5 mins can sort it out.
    Good luck.

Thanks to albertross and zahc for your replies.

I have to say that I haven't had any real problems previously with this router. It initially worked straight out of the box, and I have had it since October 2005. The web interface seems OK and easy enough to follow, or so I thought!!

Out of desperation last night I reconnected my old BT Speedtouch modem, and managed to get a connection, even though the connection dropped very quickly, but if I am honest this was always a problem with my desktop PC. This at least proved that a connection is possible on the line.

The system log on the router has the following information when attempting a connection. I should add that the lights on the router are on and flashing as though the connection is made.

    Connect: pp O !!_}
PPOA connect with IP address (not posted although there is one)
WAN gateway (not posted although there is one)
primary DNS address (not posted although there is one)
secondary DNS address (not posted although there is one)
    PPOA connection successfully established
PPOA connect with Gateway IP address (not posted although there is one)
    DSL Carrier is down
    DSL carrier is training
    DSL carrier is up
    Connection terminated

Does this suggest that the router is not able to communicate with the phone line? i.e my router needs replacing cos its broke and useless?

    Thanks

There are two well-known problems with the DSL-G604T (or more accurately, with its firmware) and you'll find them raised many times over in this forum. Fortunately there are also well-known fixes.

    The problems are:

    1. The router cannot resolve domain names after a random period of surfing. Fix: Disable the 'DNS Relay' feature, and configure the DHCP server with your ISP's specific DNS server addresses

    2. The router 'hangs' when using peer-to-peer programs. Fix: allocate a larger number of concurrent NAT sessions, and tweak the protocol timeout settings. Find a script to do this here.

This is a quote from the forum link I posted earlier.
  • Check that the ADSL settings are correct for your ISP: multiplexing method, VPI, VCI, encapsulation.

In router config, try Test under the Tools menu.

Also, try it with one of the laptops wired to the router instead and see if you get the same problem.

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't found that particulaar post on the user forum Zahc, but have now found it and printed it all out.

Will also try connecting Laptop / Router via ethernet. Hadn't thought of that before - Don't know why not!!

Next thrilling instalment to come soon I hope!! Bet you can't wait.

Just wanted to let you know that I have sorted my problem. I did everything suggested, but still no joy.

I then remembered that i have a BT Voyager ADSl router in the cupboard from a BT deal a while back. Got that out of the box, and set it all up straightaway with no hassle or problem. :j :j

Have therefore come to the conclusion that the the old router has simply stopped working.

    THanks all. :T
