Toilet troubles - New cistern coupling kit too thick

I had the diaphragm in the syphon go in my close coupled toilet, so I replaced it. The metal coupling plate and washer were well past it, so I bought some replacements.
However, the original plate was completely flat, whereas the new one is raised up at the ends where the fixings go through. Plus, the new washer is about 4 or 5 times thicker than the old one.
This means that when I try and put it all back together, the water in pipe coming from the cistern isn't quite long enough to reach the pipework coming up from the floor.
Is there anyone else who's had this problem?
Is there another, thinner kit I can get?
I really can't see a way round this at the moment

Take a picture of underneath your cistern & toilet.
If you can.Not Again0 -
Well, the coupling plate will only go on one way round, and I've tried the biggest washer in history round both ways, and neither work. The washer that came off was a lot lot thinner, although perhaps hadn't begun life that slim. The plate that came off is definitely flat. This extra thickness means the water pipe just doesn't come down far enough.0

If you buy some longer bolts it is likely that the doughnut washer will pull down well enough.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
