New BT phone line/ re-connection

Hello Money-savers! First time here, so please be gentle...
In a fortnight I'm moving into my first home, which is currently served by cable (Virgin Media) TV, phone and broadband. We won't be signing up with Virgin, so I need a BT land line to take advantage of the o2 package we've identified - line rental, anytime UK calls and 8meg broadband for £20/month.
So far we've been unable to confirm if the house has an old BT line - I guess we'll find out in two weeks! However, I'm trying to plan ahead as far as possible.
The two scenarios I've identified from BT's website are:
1. If there is a line with a dial tone, I won't have to pay a connection charge. I'll just have to pay line rental to my selected provider).
2. If there is a line without a dial tone or there is no line at all, I will have to pay a standard connection charge of £127.99.
I think its likely we'll have to pay for a new line/reconnection (scenario 2), as I'm led to believe that the current occupiers have had the cable package for a while. If we have to pay for the new line/reconnection, do you know if I need to sign a minimum term contract with BT (which would then mean I have to take their phone and broadband service, which is more expensive than o2)? I don't want a BT call package; I just want a line installing/reconnecting.
The BT website isn't any help. I've tried phoning their customer services but I'm getting different answers: some of their representatives have said "yes" (12-month contract) and others have said "no".
This is driving me crazy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

12 month contract for line rental (which includes the [free] Unlimited Weekend call plan).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Thanks Heinz - that's what I feared. Best re-do the monthly budget to take into account BT's astronomical costs.0
